Modern Slavery

The first topic we'll be studying is slavery. Obviously, we will start to uncover just truly how much of a role slavery played in the United States' development. But what we don't necessarily realize is that outside of our borders slavery is alive and well. Topics for your posts: Why does slavery exist? How has slavery changed and stayed the same compared to the traditional form that we'll study? Here's the link: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/in_depth/world/slavery/default.stm

I believe that slavery exists due to the fact that when people are desperate to get money, or they need dirty jobs done, they find or trick people to do it for them. I think that people figure that if they can't hire someone to beg, they'll just beat, starve, and force them to do it. That part has stayed the same. When I think of slaves, I think of colored men and women working in fields under the hot sun. While I'm sure it is still like this in some parts of the world, there are different kinds of slavery. I have never exactly thought of prostitution as slavery, just a mess that someone has gotten themself into, but it is a kind of slavery. And I knew that there were child soldiers, and that that kind of thing went on, but when I heard the word "slavery" it did not come to mind. Slavery is a broad term that has many different forms and meanings.

I think slavery exists because people don't like to work. If they can find someone to do all their work for them and not have to pay them they think they're pretty well off. But they're really having slaves do it all for them. Having slaves is both morally and emotional destructive and people shouldn't need to be treated like animals.

I think slavery exists because of war. Countries go in debt and the people are trying to get as much money as they can. Especially for power over others. For those who can't get money are forced to follow those who do.

Slavery has changed to a point where everyone is involved, not just the people that looked different. It has changed to where its for the needy and the unfortunate.
Its stayed the same by what these people do. They are forced to do something against their will because death or pain will greet them.

Countries are not helping this things. They think that if they just get them out of the situation it will fix things, but what happens when they are out of their "home". Where are they suppose to go? What are they suppose to do, now that what they were trained to do is gone?
Poor countries will not be able to help them without money, so they have to fix that before they help them because or they will create a problem with uneducated kids with no home. And those kids will go right back into SLAVERY.

Slavery still exists because of so many lazy people in the world. Rich people are doing almost the exact same thing too in America. They use butlers and maids to do all of their work. At least maids and butlers get paid and are able to have some what of a life. People are taking easy ways out and hiring cheap labor or slaves. Slavery hasn't really changed over the years. It is still illegal and very wrong. I don't understand why people aren't trying to stop it. We have all the power and laws to do it and yet we still don't stop slavery. Being a slave is degrading and can ruin peoples lives. We need to step up with the U.N. or what ever and end it.

I believe that slavery exists today for many reasons, each reason being different, depending on the location and the circumstances. I believe that many people who condone slavery simply see having other people do their work for them as easier than actually having to do it themselves. I believe that some people enjoy the power rush that I assume one would get from "owning" another person and having complete say in everything they do, knowing that they do not have the power or the authority to go against you. As for people stealing small children and forcing them to do their dirty work, I believe they enjoy the power rush they get from that. I mean they take the kids out of their homes, leave them clueless and with no direction, then give them some direction in life by making them do what they say and forcing them to live a life of fear.

As for slavery changing, I do not think that it has changed a great deal. It seems as though there is a lot less of the actual purchasing of people, making them your property, and a lot more of just taking them and calling them yours. I think that the reasons for wanting slaves are still pretty much the same. People enjoy having power, and knowing that they have complete power and control over another person or many other people is just a thrill for them. I also think that just as before, people still enjoy having other people complete ridiculous tasks for them, that they would otherwise have to complete themselves. Also, when I picture the traditional slavery we are learning about, I think about adults being slaves and working in fields, more so than children. I acknowledge that there were children working in the fields as slaves in traditional slavery, but it just seems that there were more adults, whereas today, there seems to be a lot more children as slaves, rather than adults. I'm sure that is in part because children are far more easily manipulated than adults are, simply because they're small and don't know any better.

When I think of slavery, I think of african americans working in fields in absurd heat and ridiculous conditions. However, some of these articles have opened my eyes a little more. I never thought of prostitution as a form of slavery. I also suppose that I somewhat categorized child soldiers in with slavery, just in a less brutal form. But now when i think about it, prostitution and child soldiers can both be equally extreme and can both be forms of slavery. Like with everything else, slavery is something that triggers different thoughts for differnt people and can have different meanings, depending on the perceptions of others.

Justin said...

ok, I understand that slavery does exist outside of our borders. Many countries use slavery just to get any job done. I think slavery existed way before the americans used slaves. Like what Aubre stated in her little "blog", if you don't want to do a job, you beat, starve and force people to do what you wish. It is like a monarchy, you rule, while everyone else suffers.

John Cormiea said...

Slavery exists because people don't want to do their dirty work. The things that did not change were that "slave owners" will do anything to keep the slaves doing the work that they are doing.

Pam Dubey said...

these articles on bbc.news were horrible. many people are too ignorant to realize that slavery is still going on in this world. i know i had no idea it still happened. i don't understand why they have slaves for jobs that others do normally. follow me with this one, people are prostitutes and soldiers by choice so why do we need to force others into it. people will do anything for money because as kevin said, people are lazy. they could easily find other ways of making money instead of torturing another human being.

slavery has changed through the years in many ways. now it seems if someone has slaves, it is a limited number. sometimes just one person. but these people are treated just how slaves were. the pattern i noticed was that now it is mostly women who are taken as slaves. they aren't as physically strong to do tasks, but this also means they won't fight back. or if they choose to fight back, the men can overpower them.

I think slavery exists in the modern world for many different reasons. Maybe the slave owners believe, most likely through what they've been taught by their elders, that they are somehow superior to the people who are their slaves. I think that some people own slaves due to laziness, but personally I think it relates to what I said before. Perhaps the owners think that they are above the "grunt" work that they force their slaves to perform. Either way, slavery is alive and well. Whatever the reasons, it's real, and it's happening to real people. I think that most Americans are ignorant to this type of thing happening around the world. I didn't know it was still happening.

BDaugherty said...

Slavery exists in this world because people have too much power. when people have power, why would they want to do anything. they take the easy way out and use the helpless people to do all there work. its way to easy for people to controll other people in this world.

I think slavery still exists because people are either forced or bribed into it. This especially happens in some foreign countries. If people need work done they find people that can be easily bribed into doing their dirty tasks. They figure that if people are so desperate for some food and some type of living quarters to survive they'll work. I mean these people have to survive somehow even if they don't get payed.Their forced or bribed to do something they don't want to, but they know if they don't consequences will face them. This part has stayed the same in most areas where slavery still exists. Slavery has changed because it's a much broader topic today and because more people are involved. I don't think people are aware of things like prostitution as a type of slavery. It's deffinetly not the first thing I think of when I hear the word slavery. But it is deffenetly a form of slavery. It also seems as if their are more children becoming slaves than their are adults today. Some parents in foreign countries are giving up their kids as slaves because they don't want them or maybe they just can't take care of them. Although most children just get kidnapped unfortunately. When you hear the word slavery your always going to think of things like Harriet Tubman or the drinking gourd song, and even just simple everyday men and woman working in the cotton fields. You have to realize that it is so much more than that.

I believe slavery exists due to the need for people to make profit and have power. Some people purchase slaves and make them do work at other places so the owners get payed, This way they are using them like investments. This also gives them some sense of power over evryone, that is one of the reasons i think people want slavery. They have this insistant drive to have power no matter what the cost. Another reason i think exists is to prove that some races are better than others if everyone thought everyone else was equal, theres a good chance slavery wouldnt exist. The last reason i think it exists is because people will do anything to get out of work even if it means having other people do it, no matter what the proffesion.

in my own opinion, i think slaves are people being taken away by cruel and lazy people. there are only two reasons why people would do this. one reason is because the person is too lazy to do his own job. so he goes out and finds someone he can decieve into doing his work. the second reason is that in his or her opinion, they don't have to pay the slaves to do their work. but that is only the manual labor. they also use slaves for sexual reasons. those type of people make me sick. slavery can be described in so many ways. but all it comes back to is cruelty and torment

timdansereau said...

based on the reading i have done i believe that slavery exists due to the fact that people, in general, are greedy.People use slaves for cheap, or free, labor to make more money for themselves. I think that people in America don't see slavery still exists and they do not realize that it is an issue in other countries. Slavery in other countries consists of prostitution, child soldiers, and hard labor.

Slavery is ever changing. People are no longer being shipped half way across the world , but they are taken from within their own country, and societies.

ethorne said...

I think that slavery still exists beacuse people need to get a job done but they dont want to do it there selves. It also exists because some people think that because they are a certain race that they are better than someone else and that they can control them and use them for there own reasons.

Slavery really hasent changed much except it does not exist in certain countries. The ways slavery has stayed the same are that children are being taken away from their parents at a very young age and forced to work long hours and do tedious work. They are also used for sex if their masters tell them to.

Chantel Bishop said...

The reason why slavery still exists is because most people today would rather have slaves do their work for them, then do their work by themselves. Therefore people are willing to pay for slaves to get their jobs done. In west Africa parents sell their own children to be servants for rich people and the servants also work on agricultural plantations. Even though slavery has changed throughout the years, I believe that it still hasn't completely gotten better quite yet. People today are just too lazy and would rather degrade other peoples lives to get their work done. Slavery is very cruel and just ruins other peoples lives throughout the world.

Carter said...

I believe that slavery still exists because of the living conditions that many people are forced to live in. Most countries who have slavery problems like Yemen, Ghana, and Cambodia, are countries that have gone through rough times of war.

A lot of modern day slavery involves mainly children. Children who have come from families that are poor or have a hard time making it through each month. Like the boy from Ghana who was sold for $25 to a fisherman, the money his family received was enough for 3 months supply of water for a family of 6. Although the little boy got off lucky and was sold to a "slave owner" who didn't beat him or hurt him in other ways, there are plenty of children who are.

Slavery has gone from choosing slaves based on origin, to choosing based on social status. Most slaves are people who cannot afford to survive on their own. Slavery has stayed the same because only the wealthy are slave owners, and there are still bad living conditions for slaves.

christa said...

I believe that slavery exists from people who are selfish and lazy. Slavery has changed because there's not anymore buying and selling of slaves. Slavery has also changed because it is not as harsh and cruel as it was back then. They don't ship slaves on ships and cram them into a little living area. Slavery has stayed the same because they do buy and sell people to other people for different reasons such as prostitution and trafficking.

Slavery is labeled in the past as different ethnic groups that were treated poorly and sent off to do work with little to no pay.Though today slavery still appears. Not in the form of race as much as the form as others who are told to do things and then are harshly punished because of not doing it.This is wrong but this will never change.Even If slavery did end then it would come back so quickly.History repeats itself and this has been going on forever.Things in peoples lives might change but people themselves will never change. Its not like everybodys going to change and be nicer to everybody else in the entire world. This would be great if it did happen but in todays world discrimanation is at its high and it wont be going back down anytime soon.

Slavery still exists because there are always going to be people in the world that are uneducated and of the lower classes, whom can then be taken advantage of. Slavery has changed in the way that it just doesn't depend on race anymore. Also, slaves don't necessarily work on farms or plantations anymore. Since we've gotten new advances in technology, slaves are more commonly used in factories now. Slavery hasn't changed in the way that no matter where they're working or how much they're getting in return, slaves are still treated in unthinkable ways.

Jen Abjornson said...

I think slavery still exists, because some people are just rude and lazy and they don't want to do things for themselves. If they need something done, they just threaten or bully someone into doing it for them. Also, another way to see how it still exists is if people are desperate for certain things, objects, or money they will do just about anything, even make people be their slaves, to get what they want.

Slavery has stayed the same as the traditional form we are learning by pretty much taking people away from their homes and loved ones and making them work for you. It is also the same, because the so called "masters" still own and control everything that that slave does. It has changed, because today it seems like there are more children being taken into slavery compared to the traditional form, which I think seemed to be more adults than young kids. I know there were both, but it just seems like there would be more adults back then and more children now. Children today just seem like they would be more naive to what is going on and adults would be more complicated to take into slavery.

As long as there are rich and lazy people that think others should be there to do their will, then there will always be slavery. Slavery can be like the colonists that used the indians like slaves because they thought the indians were hostle animals and are lesser of them. It dosn't matter the age of the people whether their children or adult slavery can and will exist.

Eleisha said...

Well I believe that slavery exists because people are too lazy to do their own work. They are too lazy, so they have other people do it for them and because they feel that they have power over them they do mean things. Slavery has changed a lot over the past decades. Most slaves from years ago were African American. People didn’t accept them as much as they do today. They treated them like animals and didn’t see them as normal human beings. Slavery has stayed the same because there are many people out there that still believe in having a slave, they may be treated better than slaves years ago but they still exist. While there are people that still believe in slavery, there are also many people that have heard stories from slaves and heard how horrible it is… so many people think it’s wrong now.

TrishaLynn said...

I believe that slavery is still in existence today mainly because of the excessive amounts of debt in other countries. There are so many countries that are so poor that people will be willing to do whatever it takes in order to get money. There are also too many people that would be willing to take advantage of people that are in those conditions. I think that war plays a large roll in the process of slavery, because the unfortunate young people in other countries are being drafted into the wars against their own free will. They are also being forced into the wars as a last result towards survival. The people who are buried in debt or who are completely broke in the first place are forced to work for those people who do have money and really don't need anymore.

svan Loon said...

I think that slavery exists because people throughout the world are constantly in a power struggle. There are some people that think they need to have power over other people because they're better and they deserve it. The enslaved people are often chosen due to their ethnicity and religous beliefs, which can lead to prejudices. They'll force the other person to do what they want, using mostly fear. The idea of slavery hasn't changed much, although some of the techniques have altered a bit. I think that one of the larger ways that slavery has changed is with children. Like in Africa, they're used as child soldiers, forced into a form of slavery with drugs and fear. Prostitutional forms of slavery have also become slightly more prominent I think, especially considering children.

My perspective on the existance of slavery would be in regards to the fact that most people lucky enough to get the slightest taste of power will most likely come to abuse it. Once people of lower class see what upper class is fancying they will probably join in aswell, and so on and so forth. Slavery exists because once people realize they can get work done for a fraction of what their paying, temptation must just be too strong to not succumb to. Slavery has changed in the terms of how quiet it is kept now-a-days, people tend to keep it more of a secret than anything.

Brendon Harrington said...

I think slavery exists because as many us you have said people that are lazy but want to be successful just have others do the work for just about nothing. Its basically pure profit they just sit back collect money and then throw the slaves a bone once in a while kinda like a dog. Although i dont think slavery is right it has been there all throughout history and in some parts of the world will remain for a while. It seems to exist in more uncivilized or underdeveloped regions where the is one king among many servants.

Nannette said...

I personally Believe that slavery exists because people are in desperate need of money. Most countrys have gone into debt from war and its cheaper to have a slave do the work for you. Just to face the facts, we have all gotten pretty lazy since then.

For the topic of slavery actually changing, i have to say i dont believe it has changed all that much. Pretty much everyone takes part, and people are still being treated as property instead of actual human beings. Other then that it has changed in a few ways, as i can see it, they arent being compacted below the deck of a ship for long journeys across the world. Another thing that hasnt changed is that these people are not being treated as they should be, they are still living hard, controlled, and unfair lives.

Unknown said...

I think slavery exists because of power and power struggles. There's always others out there who feel more important or superior than others. They use those lower than them to do their "dirty work" and think others should be forced to do it for them.

I didn't realize that slavery was still happening in many parts of the world. It seems that it really hasn't changed, the whole concept of slavery never will, using and forcing other people to do the work will always remain the same.

HaileyMarie said...

I believe that slavery exists because people don't want to do anything on there own and they want everyone else to do it for them. Why not right the more slaves you have the less you need to do yourself correct?? well slaves were treated so bad that its sickening to even know that people could do that to other human beings. If they were black they still had the right to live. Slavery has changed in ways such as people can't be bought like there on a shelf in a grocery store anymore, people aren't put an in area where its not big enough to even sit up in or kept in for weeks and smell your own feces and odor. We have a thing called rights now and it makes it so slavery can't happen as much as it used to. I myself have never thought that young girls or even women being prostitutes was called slavery i just thought they were seductive girls putting themselves out in this world to be broadcast about there personal bodies. but now that i look at it a little close i realize that its just like buying and selling slaves. Nasty perverted men sit there and check out their bodies to see weather their good enough or not to be on movies or whatever sexuality things and buy and sell to others just like master's sold their slaves to other slave owners. I find that slavery can come in many different forms.

hannah burgess said...

I feel that slavery only exists because there are lazy people who use slaves for cleaning and doing all of that work and then there are those extremely gross and perverted people that use slaves for prostitution and things of that sort. When slaves are used for working usually they work for someone who is very rich and can afford to pay for other people to clean your house and do things that you are extremely capable of doing yourself. Then there is trafficking which is just a bunch of perverted people that feel the need to buy and sell women of all ages and small boys for prostitution purposes.
I feel that the only major way that slavery has changed is that there isn’t as much slavery in the work field, for example on plantations or farms. Also there are a lot more people being stolen, captured, and abducted then there used to be. Something that is the same as old slavery is that The things that have stayed the same is that there is still trading of slaves, shipping people in tiny areas to other countries, and getting abused if you are not done the job you are told to do. Human trafficking is the best example for modern day slavery because those people are being examined by “buyers”, stuck in small little areas while they are shipped from place to place, abused when they disagree or try and run away, and are just basically mistreated just like how slaves used to be in the past.

Slavery exists Because we as a human race want to do things but we dont nesseseraly want to do them ourselvs, so we get machinery, people, or animals to do it for us. in this case they are people. These people are from poor countries with bad governments. Slavery has changed in the fact that they arent just doing farm work any more. They are being made into anything that anyone can do.

Nick Burke said...

I believe slavery is used in many different ways still. It is all over the place. When someone is forced to do something with someone watching over them, it is like being inslaved. Like if someone wants something doen that they dont want to do and dont pay someone to do, they trick others to do it with no benifit out of it. I think slavery exists inside the US today still. When someone from Mexico comes over illiegly people give them jobs that they arent supposed to have and they are payed like 2 dollars an hour. That is like slavery because everyone is supposed to make at least 7.45 an hour today, they dont. Slavery is everywere depending on how you look at it.

Brittany Lee said...

There is still slavery today because people are either lazy or want to make "easy" money. It hasn't really changed that much. It is illegal, but people still buy and sell other people. Slavery, in some sense, does seem more cruel then it used to, in a way that there are more ways to enslave people and more things to make them do. slavery is a growing problem and one of the most troublesome to the world.

sweetsir said...

Slavery still exists in the world because of the people in the world that don't want to do their own work, and care more about the profit than the abuse. Slavery though hasn't really changed that drastically. Only difference is that now, instead of just being colored people, it can be anyone. People that owe debt, or are just in need of work. And when the slaves help with their owners profit, they lose all respect for the people that work for the slave owner.
